During the 10 weeks of the Arizona Fine Art Expo 2021 I felt inspired to elevate my hummingbird paintings into 3D sculptures.
As I pondered possibilities to translate the brush strokes creating dynamic wing movement into translucent feathers I designed a technique using plexiglass and oils, amongst other materials. In a somewhat time intensive process I was able to preserve the light and lively nature of my paintings in this new medium.
The resulting bright, semi-transparent sculptures captured the attention of visitors due to their unique style and technique.
Requiring a number of steps and drying times in between, from cutting the plexiglass and painting each single feather, coating, cutting, sanding, arranging, wiring, adding layers and the opaque form, more painting and coating, and sometimes including light fixtures, each unique sculpture is created by my hands.
My sculptures range from small hanging birds, to illuminated table stands and wall sculptures, to full floor lamp sized creations. They are whimsical and playful.
By now the repertoire includes not only hummingbirds but also butterflies and bees, a glowing cactus flower and even a (commissioned) rose
My little show stoppers (especially the smaller pieces) tend to sell out quickly and can be seen in person at the Arizona Fine Art Expo (January through March 2023). Come early, as I cannot replenish them during the show! 😃 Some sculptures may be available at the Arts Prescott gallery in prescott.
Don’t hesitate to contact me to ask about availability or commissions.
