The original painting is oil in layers on a 24x36 cradled wood panel (deep gloss coat added).
When I was asked if I could transfer the techniques of my dynamic 'Helos" bird series (a combination of realistic detail and motion in 3’ bird portraits) to capture the movement of a wild mustang, I was intrigued! I aim to convey both the character and energy that together make up my 'models'. Watching horses run free, their movement, power and grace are part of their essence as much as the color of their coat would be. I hope you enjoy this transferral of my Helos series to the Son of Thunder stallion!
The Helos series features very dynamic, large-format contemporary bird portraits. Blending detailed realism and bold brush strokes these 3-4 foot canvases make a strong statement. The first paintings in this style originated during the spring lockdown, when I specifically enjoyed the many birds buzzing outside my studio in the pines. I aimed to capture the grace, movement and spirit of these birds by using different techniques to add layers. Some of my Helos style paintings (incl. hummingbirds, cardinals, owls, and even horses) are painted traditionally in oil on canvas, some are layered paint in various coats of art resin, and some are even painted on multiple acrylic layers mounted on top of each other. (side note: one of the latest offshoots of this effort are my new, unusual hummingbird sculptures).
